Most simply put, Yoga Therapy is the application of Yoga to an individual. Where a yoga class may serve a collective focus (restorative, hip opener, strengthening etc.), a Yoga Therapy session is designed to support the individual needs of the client.
A qualified Yoga Therapist works with postures, breathing, diet recommendations and lifestyle changes. The process begins with a thorough consultation which leads to the design of an individualized Yoga practice, as well as dietary and lifestyle suggestions. The program is intended to minimize physical and emotional ‘symptoms’ while also encouraging the client toward physical and emotional wellness and independence.
‘common focus & individual modifications’
Group Yoga Therapy serves the collective focus of the group (i.e. Yoga for Parkinson’s, Yoga for Anxiety, Yoga for Sleep) while also considering individual modifications. For example, in a group therapy session specific to Parkinson’s, some participants will be best served by a standing practice, while others will benefit from the stability of a seated practice. We practice together with a common focus and move according to our individual modifications.
